Background of the study

Social media political influencer strategies have emerged as vital tools for political activist groups seeking to mobilize voters in today’s digital era. In Port Harcourt, political activist groups increasingly rely on prominent online figures to amplify their messages, spark debate, and ultimately drive voter engagement. Influencers leverage platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok to create compelling content that blends political advocacy with relatable narratives (Ibrahim, 2023). These strategies encompass live streaming sessions, interactive Q&A’s, and coordinated hashtag campaigns, all designed to foster a sense of community and prompt political action. However, while such approaches offer the potential to reach large and diverse audiences, challenges including message dilution, misinformation, and algorithmic biases can limit their effectiveness (Afolabi, 2024). This study explores how these influencer strategies are implemented by a political activist group in Port Harcourt and examines their effectiveness in converting digital engagement into voter mobilization. The research combines quantitative social media metrics with qualitative insights from participant interviews, aiming to highlight best practices as well as pinpoint areas requiring strategic refinement (Okeke, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Political activist groups in Port Harcourt face challenges in translating influencer-driven social media engagement into concrete voter mobilization. Despite high online reach, inconsistencies in messaging, potential misinformation, and platform-specific limitations often undermine the desired impact on voter engagement (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of a standardized framework for evaluating influencer strategies further complicates efforts to optimize outreach. This disconnect between digital interaction and actual political participation hampers the overall effectiveness of the activist group’s campaign. Addressing these challenges is critical for ensuring that influencer strategies contribute positively to democratic engagement and voter turnout. This study seeks to investigate these issues and propose evidence-based recommendations for improving the conversion of online political influence into meaningful voter action (Afolabi, 2024).
